Following the death of his mother in 1913, Harry Houdini began to investigate spiritualism and soon became an all-out crusader against it. Early in 1924, he began lecturing throughout the United States on fraudulent mediums. In city after city, he attended séances in disguise, exposing frauds on the spot and sometimes securing their arrest, aided by his personal squad of detectives. The raids brought him huge publicity as well as a million dollars in lawsuits.' In Miracle Mongers, Houdini—who was a collector of notebooks, manuscripts, and artifacts related to magic and illusion—divulges the 'modus operandi of fire-eaters, heat resisters, poison eaters, venomous reptile defiers, sword swallowers, human ostriches [and] strong men.'

Reilly & Co., Inc., for $595.99, October 9, 1959. In fine condition. Opening: $200

Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000

Marilyn Monroe’s savings account booklet from the Trade Bank and Trust Company of New York City, twelve pages, 3.5 x 5, with the first statement page identifying the account holder in type as “Marilyn Monroe,” with passbook serial number “C 3816,” a number also present on the front cover. Only the opening page contains account details, consisting of a deposit of $10,000 on January 5, 1956, and a withdrawal of the untouched deposit on October 16, 1957; with accrued interest, Monroe withdrew a total of $10,471.72. The first two pages are stamped twice “Cancelled.” In very fine condition.

There’s no specific record explaining why Marilyn Monroe left the $10,000 untouched, but it was likely simply a savings deposit. She made it in January 1956 during a busy and transformative period in her life, when she was living in New York, studying at the Actors Studio, filming Bus Stop, and was soon to marry playwright Arthur Miller. It’s possible she set the money aside as a reserve, leaving it in the account to accrue interest until withdrawing the full balance in October 1957.
